The Topsfield Fair in Topsfield, Mass., has come a long way
since its inception in 1818.
The original vision of promoting and improving the agricultural
interests of farmers and other rural elements in Essex County strongly
remains, but sweetened by the many comfort food vendors and ridden to a
more entertaining level by an extensive midway. Modern entertainment
also plays a huge role with musicians and other celebrities annually
performing at the Topsfield Fair stage.
Food vendors at the Topsfield Fair offer some yummy comfort
foods.
The 2019 Topsfield Fair runs from Oct. 4-14. The scheduled
feature musical act is Creedence Clearwater Revisited. Other fun events
include hot dog eating contests, the New England rodeo, Dock
Dogs canine exhibition show, monster trucks,
swimming pigs and a pumpkin weigh-off. Those modern day elements of an
agricultural fair are not meant to serve as the primary fun factor,
however. The livestock shows and "field days" to showcase machinery,
equipment and skills needed for expert farming have a steadfast,
prominent role in the Topsfield Fair's success.
While traversing the 30-plus acres that includes 13 agricultural
buildings and all those midway rides, you'll see fairgoers taking equal
interest in those more traditional events. Those special events and
displays traditionally include arts and crafts, blacksmith and dairy
milking demonstrations, beekeeping, flower displays, mini train and 4H
exhibits, a petting farm, sand sculptures, and wood turning and
carving.
Walking the significant expanse of the Topsfield Fair surely proves
that being the oldest agricultural fair in the country doesn't mean
that it's boring. Thank goodness that what once started as a cattle
show has been steered in the right direction by combining fun education
experiences with entertainment. We rank it right up there with foliage
and apple picking as a top New England fall attraction!
