No need to “shell” out lots of money for boiled lobster and lobster rolls at Markey’s Lobster Pool, a large seasonal seafood shack in coastal Seabrook, N.H.
Last night, we paid $9.95 for a one lb. boiled lobster and $11.95 for a lobster roll packed and overflowing with lobster meat on a toasted bun. Can you believe those prices? We had to do a triple-take, making sure our eyes were correct on correctly identifying those prices listed on the board menus!
Happily, this isn’t some place that keeps the prices low and compromises on quality. The lobster roll was perhaps the best I’ve ever had — full of “real” lobster taste with just the right amount of mayonnaise — and the lobster was as tender and tasty as any we’ve experienced in New England.
Of course, market value dictates the prices of lobster, but the message is clear: affordability
goes into overdrive at this classic seafood shack. The same cheap prices hold true for other selections, too, including fish ‘n chips, steamers, fried clams, crab cakes, lobster bisque clam chowder and sides like close slaw, corn on the cob, onion rings, and French fries.
The indoor dining room is huge, and rather plain-looking with worn carpets and bench seating. It is very clean, however. The long, outdoor dining deck affords beautiful views of the salt marshes, leading into the Atlantic Ocean. Service has always been friendly and quick at the order-at-the-counter sections for dinners. At the lobster order counter, you can see the lobster pools where the lobsters are boiled.
Markey’s is cash-only — a bit inconvenient in our instant-everything world. Knowing the prices are “rock-bottom-of-the-sea” with the high quality of the food way, way above “C” level, we were glad to pay cash. As the great Yogi Berra once said, “cash… is just as good as money.”
It’s hard to think of a better lobster bargain than Markey’s. We highly recommend this affordable seafood destination as part of your New England summer.
