If you’re looking for cheap, filling, delicious comfort food served in a no frills atmosphere in the Boston Metrowest area, we recommend checking out Harry’s Restaurant and Dairy Bar on Route 9 in Westboro, Mass. (very close to the Mass Turnpike and Route 495).
One of the old school holdovers on an otherwise modern Route 9, Harry’s embodies the classic roadside restaurant. With vinyl as the anchor of its decor, operating hours past midnight, and friendly, efficient waitresses that have been around forever, Harry’s also happens to serve up some really delicious food. The fried clam plate is the specialty, perfectly fried with little grease and a price tag a few dollars less than most other restaurants.

Harry”s certainly delivers on its roadside restaurant presence with all the homemade food you’d expect from a place like this: eggs and bacon, meatloaf, ribs, chicken livers, fried chicken, chicken pot pie, Yankee pot roast, burgers, deli sandwiches, franks and beans, pasta dishes, broiled and fried seafood plates, soups and chowders, shakes, hot fudge sundaes, pies and a whole lot more. Through the years, I have ordered most of the dishes mentioned above, and have never been disappointed.
The place is a bit quirky, too. Harry’s staff doesn’t like being called a diner. Although you’ll see diner elements like vinyl, counter, and booth and tables, Harry’s prefers to be called a restaurant. They also have a wall loaded with signs that feature descriptions of Harry’s food and some very colorful relevant cartoon pictures.
Harry’s is cash only and that generally keeps the prices down. This is truly a classic roadside restaurant that pretty much looks the same as it did many years ago — glad to see it survive in an area that has very little of this type of restaurant remaining!
