You don’t have to go to Ireland to enjoy a traditional Irish seisiun — best described as a musical gathering session. Right here in the Boston area, the Raven’s Nest Irish pub and restaurant hosts such events on Sundays, starting at 4 p.m. Professional Irish musicians gather along with the community to create some wonderful traditional Irish music — with an occasional American song included. Bring an instrument and join the fun! Admission is free.
The atmosphere is certainly conducive to these Irish seisiuns, too, as owner Mark McCauliffe restored the space to what he remembers Irish pubs looking like when
growing up in Ireland. Cozy and intimate yet informal, the Raven’s Nest is really a great place to hang out. Glimmering hardwood floors, fireplace, a high ceiling, big picture windows that open with a scenic view of the traditional New England Walpole town common , ambient lighting and an exposed brick wall (each brick was hand painted!) lend a wonderful atmosphere.
Making the experience that much better is that the Raven’s Nest is what we’d call a major league restaurant when it comes to food and drink. The food is phenomenal here, including a pistachio chicken, apple goat cheese salmon, steak and turkey tips, Shepherd’s pie, baked mac and cheese, fish ‘n chips and mouthwatering burgers. The handsome bar spans the restaurant nearly front to back and offers a wide drink selection, including 15 different draft beers, an extensive wine list and many signature cocktails.
I don’t have footage of the Irish seisiun, but you can check out the photo above taken last St. Patrick’s Day to get a taste of the flavor of such entertainment at the Raven’s Nest. We’d recommend calling the Raven’s Nest at (508) 734-9377 to make sure the Irish seisiun is on for that given afternoon. The Raven’s Nest is located at 998 Main St., in the heart of downtown Walpole.
