Dining on a Budget in New England

How to Keep the Economy from Spoiling Your Appetite

Red Wing Restaurant, South Walpole, MA

Red Wing Restaurant, Walpole, MA ( photo by Eric H.)

I remember the inexpensive days of eating at Yoken's seafood restaurant in Danvers, MA. A chef's salad was 35 cents, a bowl of New England clam chowder 65 cents, a boiled lobster dinner $4.65 and a slice of apple pie 25 cents. What's more, the smiling, blue Yoken's whale cartoon character graced the menu, making us even happier about our dining experience.  What could be better than affordable dining and a smiling, blue whale cartoon logo in the 1970s?

Today, many Americans are blue and having a whale of a time just trying to find an affordable restaurant. The economy has affected virtually every aspect of our lives, including the occasional luxury of going out to dinner. Supermarket shopping is not much more of a value, however, as prices have seemed to skyrocket there, also, in the past year.

While no restaurants can ever match the cheap prices of places like Yoken's, the opportunity to save money while dining out is possible.  Some places that seem to keep the prices down in the New England area:

Morin's, Attleboro, MA -- It's easy for a family of four to come out of here for under $50.00, and still get tasty, creative dishes like mango flavored chicken, and a seafood pasta with fresh vegetables. Additionally, the buffet theme nights on Thursday, Friday and Saturday are great for the hungry appetite and the thrifty spender!
Morin's Diner, 16 South Main St., Attleboro, MA. Tel. (508) 222-9875

Red Wing, Diner, Walpole, MA -- The building is old, the menu is old, some of the staff is old, and so are the prices.  You can get an excellent meatloaf or turkey dinner for well under $10.00! Even the fried clams and lobster rolls have lower prices -- rarely the case at other restaurants serving the exact same dishes.
The Red Wing, 2235 Providence Highway, Route 1, Walpole, MA. Tel. (508) 668-0453

Parker's Maple Barn,  Mason, NH --  The Parker's Maple Barn "special" offers two eggs, two pancakes (or one French toast), two bacon, two sausage, and ham for a very reasonable price. For lunch, the maple ribs, chicken pie and roast beef dinner can be enjoyed at low prices. The rustic, maple barn look is worth the price of admission alone! Parkers also has a gift shop that acts like a country store with some added Native American merchandise.

Parker's Maple Barn, 1316 Brookline Road, Mason, NH. Tel. (603) 878-2308

Wrights Chicken Farm, Nasonville, RI -- Delicious all-you-can eat chicken (including pasta and delicious French fries) highlights this huge restaurant that brings in thousands every week.  One of the best dining bargains we've experienced!

Wright's Farm Restaurant, 84 Inman Road, Nasonville, RI. , Tel. (401) 769-2856

The Restaurant, Woburn, MA -- Pride of ownership, heaping breakfast, lunch and dinner portions, and the chance for a family of four to eat for under $50.00. The food is better than places that chrage twice as much. The Restaurant is a Greek-American-style cafeteria style dining spot that also gives back to its community: the staff held a Thanksgiving dinner for the poor in which more than 200 destitute people experienced a special day. The Restaurant respects its customers and the community, making it an affordable local favorite.
The Restaurant, 489 Main St., Woburn, MA. Tel. (781) 935-2511
