Old
Forge, New York: One mile long, millions of memories
by Leslie
H.
My perspective
on a tiny place in the Adirondack Mountains might just be considered
unique, as I have been to this place virtually every year of
my life since my father first took us there when I was eight
years of age. As I am now a retired educator,I am able to look
upon this place as a summer refuge lasting many decades. This
tiny place, barely over a mile in length, is Old Forge, New York.
For me, it
is not only a place of refuge and idyllic insulation;it is, more
importantly, a way of life that upon my entering its veritably
magic field of being, is in every way equal in its power and
meaning to the every impact and reality attendant to my sense
of consciousness connected to 'the real world.'
Some years back, I had a letter published in Adirondack Life
magazine which contained the following words:"In this place,
walking on a path with someone I love, I feel as if I am walking
alongside myself".
In terms
of simplicity, the words above tell all in terms of the meaning
Old Forge has for me.
I continue to visit this hamlet, with the sense that after Life
ceases, the power of Memory, in some arcane way, will keep Old
Forge immortal within the aegis of my entity. I could not be
more grateful.
