Portland Head Light, Fort Williams Park, Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Article and photo by Eric H.

With salt air, rocky coast and the clear blue Atlantic Ocean, it's hard to get any more "Maine" than Portland Head Light. Located within the expansive and historic Ft. Williams Park grounds in Cape Elizabeth, Portland Head Light is a tourist's visual delight, a photographer's dream and a personal pride and joy of Maine tourism. As the oldest lighthouse -- and one of the most photographed in Maine -- this piece of archictecture is a gem with the beacon proudly rising above a red roof, green trim , perfetly maintained house. There's an interesting museum inside the house tracing Fort William's military history, and the park is a haven for kite flyers, walkers, picnicers and those in love with the New England sea. Only 10 minutes from the charming working port city of Portland, Maine, it is just one of the many tourist attractions that makes this areas so special.
