The closest many of us get to an authentic New England fishing pier is looking at the regional illustrations and phrases on a supermarket bought frozen seafood box. A better alternative would be to visit Galilee, a live, thriving fishing village in Narrangansett, RI. Galilee is not polished or refined by any means, but it's certainly a "real" place where you can see fishermen on their whethered boats, eat at some terrific waterview restaurants (George's of Galilee, Champlin's) that feature that "just-off-the-boat seafood," and spend a day at Salty Brine and George's Beaches -- a nice stretch of adjoining beach with plenty of sand and gentle enough waves. It's more of a family than a "show-off" beach, great for families in search of a more wholesome beach.  Additionally, beach, gift and ice cream shops help contribute to the perfect summer day in a community that has refused to bow to trendiness.  It's nice that these type of fishing villages still exist in New England.
