Scenes of New England Photo Gallery: Guilford, CT

Guilford, CT

Article and photo by Eric H.

Of all the places in New England we'd like to be, Guilford, CT, at the lower Connecticut seacoast, ranks right at the top. Twenty minutes from the urban madness of New Haven, CT, Guilford stands out as a peaceful oasis with its remarkable downtown historical preservation, beautifully manicured streets with 17th, 18th and 19th century homes, classic New England white steeple churches and locally-owned shops and restaurants surrounding what is perhaps New England's finest village green.  The 12-acre green consists of shaded, paved walkways under proud old trees, benches to take in the splendid look of historical New England, and a peaceful aura from a previous era.  Guilford still regards its Village Green as the centerpiece of community activity with its community fairs and exhibits, parades, graduations, etc. The downtown is so impressive that one forgets that the ocean is just minutes away, as one can bike or drive along scenic Route 146 to view the picturesque Long Island sound and salt marshes.

Guilford is not just another manufactured historical tourist trap -- it is the real deal, a true reflection of  what we expect New England to look like.
