A Peaceful Easy Feeling Seeing This Eagle in Massachusetts

Bald eagle spotting in Massachusetts.

One early July morning, my wife Joan
texted
me from her stopped car near Willett Pond in Norwood, Mass. to enthuse
about a bald eagle sighting. It took
me 10 minutes to get to that location with my 40X zoom point-and-shoot
camera in hand
(optical zoom offers a huge advantage over a cell camera) and,
amazingly, the
eagle was still there. He seemed content, perched on top of a church's
crucifix. File that one under "bird of pray!"
Walking as quietly as possible, avoiding closing the car door and
turning off the radio playing the bombastic "Ballroom Blitz" by
Sweet, I
took these pictures from about 50 ft.away. No one else stopped to
witness this awesome bald eagle sighting despite myriad cars passing by
the church.
At one point, a territorial mockingbird circled the calm, stoic, still
eagle but no incidents came out of this interaction between the two
birds. The eagle did take off shortly, however, after the mockingbird arrived,

I had been hoping for years to witness an eagle up close and then snap
a few pictures to capture the instant memory. Past efforts have
resulted in seeing more camera pixelation than bird, given the farther
distances between person and eagle.
This time proved different, finally seeing this magnificent, rare bird
with the human eye rather than through a PBS special on
television.
Fortunately, the bald eagle has become less rare, according to
Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife MassWildlife), reporting in 2020 that they
documented more than 70 active eagle nests throughout Massachusetts.
My hope is that you are lucky enough to spot a bald eagle in the Bay
State or wherever you reside!
