Famous at the “Witch City,” Salem, Mass., has a brew of cheap travel destinations that won’t have you flying off the handle. It’s really a great, little city with a fantastic, brick-dominated pedestrian downtown district and appealing waterfront area called Pickering Wharf. Here are three cheap travel ideas that we recommend when visiting this appealing city on the North Shore:
Take a one hour, narrated tour on the Salem Trolley (Tel. 978-744-5469) that focuses on the city’s history, hidden gems, and stops along the way including Pickering Wharf, the House of the Seven Gables, and the Salem Witch Museum. I initially hesitated to include the Salem Trolley as a cheap travel idea – $15 per adult, seniors, $14, and children 6-14 $5, at this writing, but I think the tour is well worth the money as it’s the best way to see this remarkable city. The trolley is far more entertaining than some area attractions that cost twice the amount. Regarding cultural attractions, be sure to check out the aforementioned Salem Witch Museum. This landmark Salem travel attraction centers on the Salem Witch Trials in 1692 through a tour that features life-size figures, lighting and a spirited narration. Although the admission price is reasonable to begin with, you can lower the price even more by purchasing discount tickets to the Salem Witch Museum
