Brookdale Fruit Farm in Hollis, N.H., is one of our favorite farms in New England.
First, we love local success stories. Back when we were growing up in late 1960s and early 1970s, I remember Brookdale being run out out by the road in front of a house and then from the owner’s garage. Now, Brookdale Fruit Farm reigns as one of New England’s most complete and aesthetically-pleasing large-sized farm stands with its rustic exterior and large indoor central produce market and greenhouses with marvelous-looking plants. The look fits into Hollis’ quintessential, traditional New England feel quite well.
Now about apples. According to the Brookdale Fruit Farm web site, 19 varieties are ready to pick including Honey Crisp, Early Macs, and Paula Red. Additionally, Brookdale has adopted techniques where its apples are sprayed less — good news for those concerned about their health.
The apple picking experience here is absolutely wonderful, with easy-to-reach tree, scenic, expansive fields and places to have picnics. Add a farm animals area and ice cream stand, and you have a fantastic day trip!
As mentioned in previous posts, apple picking is a great, affordable late summer, early fall activity. Also, don’t forget to check out the Brookdale Fruit Farm market area with it fruits and vegetables from the field, as well as jams, jellies, pies, sauces, gourmet cuisine, and cheese selection. Brookdale also features “Hollis” products like honey, eggs and grass fed beef.
