Are There Any Howard Johnson’s Restaurants Remaining in New England?

Share this New England story on

Howard Johnson’s restaurants graced the highways and byways of the United States dating back to 1935 and eventually expanding into more than 1,000 restaurants, nationwide and in Canada. You could always count on a hearty breakfast, lunch, dinner or one of the tasty 28 flavors of ice cream at these solid, old school restaurants. And the waitresses consistently seemed friendly and welcoming — and always dressed in those familiar, pleasant short sleeve, peach-colored polyester dresses with an orange and plaid front bodice!

Now there are only two Howard Johnson’s restaurants remaining in the United States, one in Lake Placid, N.Y., and the other right here in New England — at the Howard Johnson Inn in Bangor, Maine, to be exact. Julie, manager at the Bangor location, told me that her restaurant does not have the trademark Howard Johnson’s exterior orange roof nor dinners or the 28 flavors of ice cream, but you can enjoy breakfast and lunch here at those well-known reasonable Howard Johnson’s prices.

It might be a HoJo’s restaurant only in name at the Bangor site, but that’s good enough for us — and it’s nice to know that there’s a cheap eats place en route to one of our favorite Maine destinations, Acadia National Park!

Howard Johnson Inn and Restaurant is located at 336 Odlin Rd, Bangor, ME. Tel. (207) 942-5251
