With the economy struggling big-time, many couples have been finding creative but meaningful ways over the past few years to enjoy Valentine’s Day weekend without the big expense.

Last Valentine’s Day, we did just that by taking a nice country drive to Somethin’s Brewin’ Cafe in the pleasant, small southeastern Massachusetts town of Lakeville. (yes, you’ll find a huge lake here, and is it ever beautiful!)). This incredibly charming, restored former public library, built in 1914, serves up some tasty freshly-brewed coffee, delicious homemade baked goods and beyond-the-norm sandwiches. How nice it was on Valentine’s Day to have a leisurely meal in an atmosphere featuring a brick, wood-burning fireplace, oak floors, detailed wainscoting, antiques, memorabilia, paintings,  long windows with mullions dividing each pane, high ceilings, a “disorganized” organized setting of tables and chairs, and a very comfortable large sofa.

Some of the menu items include cinnamon and raspberry pie dough twists, muffins (fantastic!), scones, cranberry walnut chicken salad (really, really good!)), balsamic tuna salad (really, really, really good!), quiche, homemade soups and salads. Specials of the day feature chicken and meat pies, and calzones.

Somethin’s Brewin’ has its owners onsite to ensure an overall quality dining experience. We found the service to be incredibly friendly.  The staff treated us like old friends!

Yes, Somethin’s Brewin’ might not be along the lines of an expensive candlelit evening out over some French cuisine, but we found somehow skipping the expensive meal and opting for an unpretentious, casual place for comfort and good conversation was ultimately priceless. We highly recommend checking out Somethin’s Brewin’ out for Valentine’s Day weekend!
