Anyone who says “Nothing is perfect,” clearly hasn’t tried the fried seafood platter at Evelyn’s Drive-In in Tiverton, R.I.
Granted, fried seafood isn’t every one’s preference but for fans of this popular New England dish, Evelyn’s offers a superb heaping combination of clams, scallops, calamari, cod fish, shrimp at a great value. The fried seafood is not greasy at all, but somehow perfectly retains all the tasty goodness that we’d expect in a dish like this. We paid $46.00 (plus a good serving of fresh lobster meat for an additional $6.00). The market price can change the price of these types of seafood on a regular basis, but we found that this one dish served three hungry people quite well. So broken down, the seafood platter cost, for us, a little over $15.00 per person. That’s why we’ve included this meal in our Thrifty New England Traveler blog!
Of course, Evelyn’s goes way beyond just the seafood platter. Featured on Guy Fierei’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and
Dives” and by many prominent New England media, Evelyn’s offers a variety of classic New England seafood
specialties (and a few offbeat ones like the lobster chow mein)) including Rhode Island clam chowder (with a thinner broth), lobster bisque, lobster rolls, lobster plates, crab cakes, grilled salmon and pan seared scallops.
Evelyn’s also has a bar serving beer, wine and cocktails. For you dessert lovers, Grape Nut pudding and
blueberry pie are a few of the raved about sweets at Evelyn’s.
Located at scenic Nanaquaket Pond, the informal indoor dining room and fairly large outdoor patio afford beautiful views of the water. We’ll be back in the summer for some seafood and relaxing outdoor dining, preferably at sunset!
