Harrows, a Reading Mass.-based landmark selling take-out chicken pies, recently opened its newest location on Route 1 in Dedham, Mass.
This is great news for south-of-Boston residents and for those that work in the area, as well as many Boston neighborhoods that are just minutes away. I’ve always regarded Harrows as serving the best chicken pies of any I’ve tried in New England. The combination of fresh chicken, carrots and potatos combined with an amazing gravy and crust is truly delicious — and cheap and filling, too. One serving of this great meal costs just $5.50 and up to six servings $19.95, at this writing. You can also order a chicken pie with no vegetables at similar prices.
Harrows also has what I feel are the best homemade blueberry and apple pies in New England. Just like the chicken pies, the made-from-scratch fruit pies simply taste better than any other place in New England that we’ve experienced.
While the Reading location has a old-time feel, the Dedham spot looks more like a basic modern, fast-food take-out spot. Don’t let that look fool you: the chicken pies and fruit pies are to die for, and just as good as they tasted generations ago (Harrows actually began well before my time in the 1930s). This is truly cheap eats at its best in the Boston, New England region!
