Look at that sign in this York Beach, Maine scene: Two ocean beaches and one of the most beautiful, famous lighthouses in the United States.
That sign says it all about the fun to be had in this classic New England summer travel destination — which, by the way, is really nice to visit in the spring and fall, too.
Looking beyond that sign, however, reveals a lot more about York Beach. The downtown is vibrant in the warmer weather with restaurants, gift shops, a bowling alley, arcades, bandstand concerts and storefronts that sell sweets like fudge and salt water taffy (more on that shortly).
York Wild Kingdom pleases kids of all ages with its zoo and amusement park. And, of course, the Goldenrod — as pictured here across the street from the sign — is renowned for its salt water taffy and the fun of watching staff making these sweet morsels through a picture window. The Goldenrod has been in business since 1897 and clearly one of the most endearing, must-see attractions in this lively coastal wonderland. It’s also a great spot to enjoy breakfast, New England clam chowder, a Maine lobster roll, sandwiches and salads as well as homemade ice cream at the old-fashioned soda fountain. There’s also a very nice gift shop section at The Goldenrod!
That sign in downtown York Beach is certainly a good sign of what’s to love in York Beach. It’s an iconic scene of an introductory sort that leads to more iconic scenes!
