Desert Island in Maine, offers amazing panoramic views during daylight and sunset of Bar Harbor, the Cranberry Islands, Porcupine Islands,\u00a0and Acadia National Park, in general.<\/p>\n<p>With a 1,532 ft. elevation, this &#8220;high point&#8221; of an Acadia National Park vacation is, arguably, the best scenic introduction to this beautiful area where the ocean meets the mountains.  We like the sunsets the best  &#8212; the skies are capable of turning a blazing orange, as well as other colorful dramatic looks. At the other end of the day, Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the United States that the sun rises each morning!<\/p>\n<p>We recommend driving the 3.5 mile paved winding road up the mountain, and enjoying some equally beautiful views along the way en route to feeling like <a href=\"http:\/\/visitingnewengland.com\/blog-cheap-travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSCN1072.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-283\" title=\"DSCN1072\" src=\"http:\/\/visitingnewengland.com\/blog-cheap-travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/DSCN1072-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Mt. Desert Island, Maine\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>you&#8217;re on top of the vacation world at this modestly elevated (actually, it&#8217;s the tallest mountain along the eastern coast of the United States), but magnificent peak.  Enjoy the .3 miles of hiking trails atop Cadlillac Mountain to get the most out of the myriad scenic perspectives.
