No matter how crowded Walden Pond becomes — especially in the summer — the peaceful and tranquil presence of the shimmering pond provides a respite from the outside world. Perhaps that is why Thoreau lived here and modern-day visitors find Walden Pond a place to return to again and again.

Many ponds have just as good scenery, but there’s just something about Walden that offers an added special element that cannot be fully described, only visited. We especially enjoy the fall time when the crowds are a bit less, there’s a nice crisp feel to the air, and the foliage colors enhance an already glorious area.

Editor’s note: Walden Pond is open from 8 a.m. to sunset, which varies with the season. We recommend you first stop by the Visitor’s Center across from the pond at 915 Walden St., Concord (Tel. 978-369-3254).
