It’s a well-known fact that you won’t get any ocean views at Pier 18 Seafood and Grille in landlocked East Bridgewater, Mass., but then again, the low seafood prices won’t put you underwater.

We don’t know how they do it, but this informal, family-run, diner-like restaurant — about 20 minutes from Plymouth, Mass. — turns out seafood just as good as many of the much-heralded seafood local dining destinations but without the obnoxious prices. A quick look at the menu, at this writing, reveals baked seafood dishes ranging in price from $12.50 (haddock) to $16.50 (scallops). Baked seafood dinners are served with potato, vegetable and roll. Fried seafood plates range from $11.50 (fish and chips) to $17.50 (clam plate). Seafood Plates are served with french fries and cole slaw, roll, lemon wedge and tartar sauce. The portions are generally huge!

Here’s the real draw: daily specials often include lobster dinners. We were amazed at the Sept. 8, 2010, offering of a boiled, twin one pound lobster for $18.95! We also recently came across a “Family Fish Feed” for only $25.00.

So, while the regular menu will save you a few bucks, we recommend calling Pier 18 at (508) 378-1378 for the daily specials — that’s where you can really save money.

Additionally, be sure not to miss the wonderful kale soup with its fantastic blend that transforms this bland vegetable into a soup you can’t get enough of — the spices and sausage significantly help the matter. On the seafood side, the New England clam chowder is chock full of clams and a rich flavor that rivals the best of clam chowder that we’ve sampled in New England.

We’ve tried fried fish, broiled fish, lobsters and other seafood dishes here, and it’s all very good — wish Pier 18 was closer to us as we’d be frequenting this friendly, little place much more often. While it’s easy to find great seafood in New England, it’s more of a challenge finding affordable seafood. More often than not, Pier 18 certainly solves that problem.

Pier 18 Seafood and Grille,
205 Bedford Rd., Route 18,
East Bridgewater, Mass.
Tel.
