Yesterday, I had briefly mentioned the Grand View Inn & Cottages in the article about sunrises in Maine. As a follow-up to that shout out, I’d like to emphasize the Grand View is definitely our favorite place to stay in York Beach.
Sure, more upscale places exist in the area but there’s just something that feels so right about the Grand View Inn & Cottages. First, the location can’t be beaten with views of the Atlantic Ocean right across the street. Second, Long Sands affords a fantastic ocean beach experience. It is one of the longest stretches of beach in Maine, thus allowing for long walks, sunning and swimming — the latter when the tide is placid enough.
The Grand View features clean, fairly spacious affordable rooms with private baths and oceanfront views from every room. On a clear day, you can view scenic landmarks like Nubble Lighthouse, Boon Island and the Isle of Shoals in Portsmouth, N.H. What a nice setting to watch the waves crashing, take in the salt air and feel the coastal breeze over a nice cup of coffee or tea from your patio or balcony.
Additionally, the Grand View offers an indoor pool with a perfect temperature — slightly to the right of warm. This allows one to enter the pool immediately without any chill. Plus, from some perspectives, you can see the Atlantic Ocean. Best of both worlds!
And then there are the sunrises. Oh, those sunrises that seem to have their own personalities when shining down on York Beach…
Last but not least, the Grand View Inn & Cottages is time-tested, having been in business for more than 50 years. The owner is really nice in a non-pretentious, authentic kind of way and with staff quite attentive to customer needs. This is an important element of staying at an inn. Many years ago, we stayed at another inn in York Beach which turned out to be a nice place except for the owner. He was arrogant and somewhat elitist.
A few months later, we returned to York Beach for a day trip. We stopped in to say hello and said, “Do you remember us?” He said, “Why, should I?” with the most condescending tone. That is why we sought another place to stay. All things happen for a reason, I suppose, and that crummy ower indirectly led us to a far better place to stay.
We are so glad to have found the Grand View and hope you get to experience this ideally located, welcoming inn by the sea.
The Grand View is located at 800 York St, York Harbor, ME. Tel. 207-363-3838.
