Often we think of the colorful leaves of a tree as the essence of fall foliage in New England but what about the blanket of leaves on the ground?
Recently, I visited Silver Lake State Park in Hollis, N.H. and found this beautiful scene with leaves on the tree and the ground. It was like the best of both worlds — that is, being surrounded by colors from above and below. The leaves on the ground provided a wonderful crunchy carpet to experience this classic New England autumn scene. That perspective, combined with a lake most beloved as a southern New Hampshire summer beach destination, made it hard to leave. The views provided a step up from the often muted foliage seen at this time of the year in southern New Hampshire.
I grew up as a Silver Lake beach kid, victoriously swimming out to the dock and warming up on the sandy beach while downing grilled hot dogs and hamburgers from the concession stand that had a strong, rustic wood smell. While the beach has emptied with summer memories in the rearview window, views of Silver Lake through a fall lens possess its own magic presence.
Never had it occurred to me that Silver Lake could be an equally memorable New Hampshire place past Labor Day Weekend. The scene provided such splendid fall foliage season nourishment that there was really no need to move on and find better scenes farther up north in the Granite State.
Sometimes, the most special destinations are there right in front of your own eyes without realizing it. That blanket of leaves in all their foliage glory just felt so right and will do so in the travel memory bank that lasts throughout the cold season in New England.
