This photo of the American flag and the building that once housed the Montgomery Ward department store pretty much sums it up about Putnam, Conn: it’s an old, patriotic town with a knack for reinventing itself while hanging onto its roots.<\/p>\n
Putnam — a small mill town located in the northeast “Quiet Corner” of Connecticut — has evolved into a major antiques center of New England with around 20 stores, totaling 50,000 sq. ft. of shopping! Other types of independently-owned stores and restaurants have also opened, thus making Putnam even more of an appealing place to visit. This upswing is heartwarming as, I recall, Putnam, being a somewhat depressed mill town about 20 years ago. It’s still a little rough around the edges, but is really one of the friendliest towns I’ve visited in New England. I’ve chatted with some locals while shopping at antique stores, and they absolutely love their town.
