Are you sick of visiting “Anytown USA” and seeing the same strip malls, chain restaurants and faceless highways? Well, thank goodness for Exeter, N.H., which doesn’t look like any other town. Home of the prestigious Phillips Exeter Academy college prep school, there’s a leafy feel to this town but also a plain, old-fashioned mill-like presence. I feel like this contrasting combination keeps the town from getting too stuffy or gritty. Historical preservation of the town has been impressive, and the variety of downtown mom and pop stores and restaurants makes Exeter a fine travel destination for those who want a pleasant, lower profile place to visit.
