We soon hope to write a full review on the Cedar House Restaurant in Walpole, Mass but for now, straightforwardly, share an initial impression: This is an instant gem of a local restaurant!

The cozy, separate dining room and bar areas, homey-like neighborhood atmosphere (it is located in a quaint older home) and comfort food selections that go beyond the norm make for a most enjoyable dining experience. Additionally, the Cedar House offers an impressive list of beers, wines and cocktails.

This new restaurant seems like it has been around a long time yet has only been in business less than a month, at this writing. Excellent service, food and drink to go along with a nice ambiance indeed have that profound affect.  But there's something more to the restaurant than the above that's hard to fully describe. The Cedar House just feels right, like a home away from home and with a greater commitment to a focus on the food than many restaurants of this genre. That's the first impression, at least.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first meals at the Cedar House: a shared Caesar salad and then a burger and steak and cheese sandwich as the main course. The burger, in particular, was a standout -- definitely in the top five burgers I have ever tasted, anywhere. The distinct, full-bodied char-broiled flavor, combined perfectly with melted cheddar cheese, balsamic onion and bacon with Cajun mustard, more than satisfied a burger craving. It defined the word, "mouthwatering!"

The Cedar House had big shoes to fill when the beloved Patriot Tavern closed last year at this location.  The two restaurants share similar traits as pleasant local eateries and watering holes. The Cedar House, however, seems to have taken the cuisine to the next level by refining dishes without compromising their innate mass appeal. Word has it the Cedar House employed the chef from the former Olivardi restaurant in neighboring Norwood, Mass. -- one of the most highly-regarded "casuual upscale" restaurants in the southwest Boston suburbs. Looks like he brought this culinary magic to this humble roadside restaurant and bar!

We look forward to frequenting this "home away from home" and trying the appetizers, salads, pizzas, sandwiches main entrees (steaks, chicken, seafood, pasta) and homemade desserts, as well as the weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oh, and that cozy outdoor patio, too! Stay tuned for updates.

I captured this scene on Oct. 31, 2020 on North Street in Walpole, Massachusetts. Notice the contrast of foliage and recent snowfall. This is part of what makes New England so special! North Street is one of the most beautiful semi-rural locations in the Boston suburbs. If in the area, definitely take a ride there! This photo was taken at 80 ISO, F8.0, with a shutter speed of 60. It is best printed at 8X10 but also looks fine at 11X14 or 16X20.
