A large cheese pizza for $6.99? How does First Sandwich Shop, of Walpole, Mass., make any “dough” off that?

All puns aside, the First Sandwich Shop, in the heart of downtown Walpole (a southwest Boston suburb), has gained a reputation by offering large portions of food at a great value. Now, all this would be for naught if the food wasn’t good, but First Sandwich owner Tom Dugdale puts a lot of pride and long hours into his business resulting in some very good food that comes out of this long-time local favorite business.

The thin-crust pizza with a tangy herb sauce and limited but good tasting cheese is certainly worth the $6.99 price (large cheese) and the pizzas with toppings don’t cost all that much more. First Sandwich also offers a “meal deal” –selections include pizza, sandwiches and a fabulous chili coming in at $4.99 a meal — accompanied by potato chips or cookies and a soft drink or water. Six-inch subs start at only 4.50! First Sandwich Shop also offers some excellent pasta dishes and calzones, as well as homemade soup specials and salads,

You can eat in or take-out (there’s a designated pick-up parking space out front). The interior with limited seating is pleasant — sort of a small-town sub shop feeling where Tom knows many of his customers. Mr. Dugdale is also an expert on dinosaurs, having once appreared on the David Letterman Show. In his sandwich and pizza shop, you’ll find dinosaur designs, exhibits and memorabilia.

Great little place. We hope the great food values never become extinct!
