When planning the Christmas Holiday season in New England, the spectacular Millis Wonderland Christmas holiday display in Millis, Mass., always ends up at the top of our travel wish list.

Lately, I’ve been checking into the Millis Wonderland Web Site with frequency to find out the 2011 schedule — kind of like the way a kid would come downstairs early on Christmas day to find out if Santa had arrived with presents. This morning checking back into the site, the “gift” had arrived: the 2011 Millis Wonderland season will open Friday, Dec. 2, and end Sunday, Dec. 25, Christmas Day. Hours are 6 p.m.-10 p.m., seven days a week through this period.

This one-of-a-kind Christmas holiday display, located on a rather remote, rural street in this very solid, appealing small suburban Boston town, never fails to offer one of the most amazing holiday scenes in the area. With multi acres of lights across local businessman Kevin Meehan’s property, you’ll see more than 45 incredibly detailed and lovingly crafted displays featuring Santa’s friends, family and elves. My personal favorites are the festive Disney display with Mickey, Donald and Pluto, a kids sledding scene with an idyllic winter backdrop, a lighted horse and buggy, a real tugboat, and a huge Santa figure alongside his reindeer and spectacular lights spelling our “Merry Christmas!” Be prepared to drive the property for at least 20 minutes to fully appreciate the wonder of Millis Wonderland!

Last year we sat in traffic backed up a mile on a Tuesday night, but that was OK. While anticipating the wonderful displays, we rolled down the windows and enjoyed the fresh, chilly winter air, the big country sky with stars above, and some of the beautiful farm houses along the way. Hard to believe we were just 35 miles from Boston!

When arriving at Millis Wonderland, it was like the switch was turned on to start the magic of the holiday season. If Millis Wonderland doesn’t get you in the Christmas spirit, nothing will!
