If you’re looking for some delicious pizza before or after a New England Patriots game at Gillette Stadium, you’ll have no problem scoring a touchdown finding this fantastic, cheap form of food. Here are some personal favorites:
Tavolino, at Gillette Stadium’s Patriot Place shopping and entertainment complex, offers some very tasty “gourmet-style” pizza, including the innovative scallop and bacon, Sicilian vegetable, beef short rib with scallions, and prosciutto and fig marmelatta. The setting is contemporary casual and while the prices of pizzas are a tad more higher than the norm, we feel it’s worth it! 274 Patriot Place, Tel. (508)543.6543
Sal and Mal’s, Foxboro, is a little hole-in-the-wall storefront located on a side street in downtown Foxborough. Get ready for some delicious huge slices here, made from scratch while you wait. The plain cheese and loaded-with-pepperoni kinds will do just fine, incredibly enhanced by a homemade tomato sauce busting with flavor. The seating is limited here and the atmosphere on par with a boiler plant, but who cares? The staff is really nice and the pizzas phenomenal. 8 Wall St., Foxboro. Tel. (508) 543-1966. Approximately three miles from Gillette Stadium.
Red Wing Diner, Walpole It’s hard to pass on the speciality here, the fried clams, but the bar pizza is equally good — cheesy, lots of toppings and a great sauce. A classic roadside restaurant in business for a long time, the Red Wing has a great no-frills atmosphere — ideal for a pre or post game meal. Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) was here a few weeks ago! 2235 Providence Hwy, Route 1, Walpole. Tel. (508) 668-0453. Approximately two-and-a-half miles from Gillette Stadium.
The Raven’s Nest, Walpole The prototype for the perfect Irish Pub, the Raven’s Nest is outstanding for contemporary cuisine and upscale pub fare — and equally adept at creating a fabulous hand-tossed, grilled pizza with homemade tomato sauce. I am in love with the “Goat Broke Loose” with caramelized onions, roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella and goat cheese crumbles. Other pizza offerings: Margherita, Italian Sausage, Farmer’s Harvest (romano, roasted suntan peppers, caramelized onions, broccoli florets, mushrooms, grape tomatoes, roasted corn, fresh mozzarella, basil), and the Bluesville Steak (mozzarella, marinated red onions, sliced steak tips, bleu cheese crumbles, balsamic nectar, field greens). Cozy, attractive and welcoming, The Raven’s Nest is a great place to watch the game on the myriad televisions. Interesting side note: The Raven’s Nest has temporarily changed its name to the Patriots Nest, given the Pats are playing the Ravens. Once the game is over, they’ll return to being The Raven’s Nest! 998 Main St., Walpole. Tel. (508) 734-9377. Approximately five miles from Gillette Stadium
Guido’s, Norfolk Guido’s has the knack for making excellent Italian-style pizzas that are heavy on toppings and with a proper mix of fresh tomato sauce and cheese. The comfortable moderately-sized dining room is a favorite for families the older crowd and those looking for a casual date night out, while the cozy bar is quite popular for a good variety of drinks and watching sports on the wide screen television. If you’re not in the mood for pizza, defintely try one of the many freshly-made pasta dishes here. 218 Dedham St., Route 1A, Norfolk. Tel. 508-219-4220. Approximately three miles from Gillette Stadium.
Tavern at Wrentham, Wrentham Owner Doug Smith knows how to make a wholesome tasting Italian pizza, given he has years of experience as the owner of the Pizzeria Grande storefront in Walpole. Very solid pizza in a classic neighborhood restaurant bar setting — a very good place to watch the game, grab a beer and several slices! The Tavern also specializes in lobster, other fresh seafood, steak, chicken and pasta dishes. 263 Shears St., Wrentham. Tel. (508) 384-0010. Approximately five-and-half miles from Gillette Stadium.
Jimmy’s Pizzeria, East Walpole If you enjoy Greek pizza, this is our go-to place in Norfolk County. As you know, some Greek pizzas are too greasy and tend to taste stale, but not Jimmy’s. Much like its spotless dining room and kitchen appearance, goodwill projects toward the town of Walpole, and the incredibly nice Kalemkeridis family running Jimmy’s, pride of ownership is also apparent in the nearly perfectly-made Greek pizza. They definitely have the right mix of cheese, tomato, crust and oil! 4 East St., Walpole. Tel. (508) 660-6700. Approximately seven miles from Gillette Stadium.
