Remember Lum’s, the family-style chain restaurant favorite from the 1960s and 1970s that specialized in beer-soaked steamed hot dogs with a special bun sauce, the Ollie Burger with its 18 special spices, Lum’s beer and kids chocolate dessert-like drinks served in frosted tall glasses, and those funny TV commercials with Milton Berle?
Well, the Lum’s that sadly went bankrupt in 1982 has made a comeback in Seekonk, Mass., with two locations at 717 Fall River Ave. and 193 Central Ave. Turns out that some locals, forever in love with Lum’s, decided to bring it back — and successfully did so by purchasing the rights to the recipes and the Lum’s name. The first Seekonk Lum’s opened in early 2011.
Imagine the surprise when reading my brother-in-law Tom’s post yesterday on Facebook about dining at Lum’s in Seekonk with his wife, Anne. I can hardly wait to give it a try as Lum’s was a restaurant I wish had never gone away. This wasn’t just your average garden variety, soulless chain restaurant — there was real personality to the place, not to mention foods that tasted fresh and not frozen.
You won’t find the tiffany lamps and cozy carpeted rooms that lent a cozy neighborhood atmosphere to the original Lum’s chain — and it would be physically impossible for Milton Berle to do the commercials — but the current day no-frills Seekonk Lum’s atmosphere still possesses Lum’s comfort food, cheap eats staples including the aforementioned beer-soaked steamed hot dogs and Ollie Burger, as well as roast beef sandwiches and fish and chips.
Lum’s history is rather fascinating with a purchase of a smaller version of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas in 1969, the Milton Berle commercials, a KFC takeover of the chain in 1971, and a run from extremely popular to defunct in a short amount of time.
Here’s hoping the only Lum’s in the United States here in Seekonk has a long and successful run, pleasing fans from the past — and current and future generations. I’ll post a full review once I get down there! If anyone has been to either of the Seekonk locations, please feel free to share your thoughts on Lum’s in the comments box below. Thanks!
The two Lum’s locations are located at 717 Fall River Ave. and 193 Central Ave. in Seekonk MA.
Oh, and for old-time memories, here is that Milton Berle Lum’s commercial…
