Ahhh, wild Maine blueberry pie and ice cream, the way desserts in Maine should be.
Ok, we just did a clever food variation of the Maine state motto, “The way life should be,” but it’s just as powerful and accurate a statement. This dessert from the seasonal Fox’s Lobster House in York, Maine, sources from the abundance of wild blueberries in Maine to create an abundantly delicious regional treat.
The ice cream flavor ranks up there with one of the best ice cream dishes we have ever tasted in in New England. Chock full of wild Maine blueberries, a thick high-butterfat texture and taste and a touch of sugar to sweeten things more, this ice cream stands on its own and can actually be ordered that way without the pie. Why, however, stop there? The wild Maine blueberry pie just adds to the overall experience with its fresh-out-of-the-oven taste made with a perfectly-formed flaky crust and enough blueberries to transcend the filler to wonderfully fulfilling.
What’s more, eating this Maine dessert can be enjoyed with views of the famous Nubble Lighthouse in full view. Sit on a picnic bench at Fox’s outside food stand (the inside waterfront restaurant is a fabulous dining spot, as well) and take in the essence of quintessential Maine right there. We must say, however, in parental fashion that you must eat your main meal before any dessert! That being said, Fox’s delivers with fabulous lobster, lobster rolls, locally caught seafood and fried seafood platters.
But even during dinner, the thoughts of that wild Maine blueberry ice cream and pie dominate the thought process. It’s really a must-have dessert when in York Beach!
