Dining out | East Side Restaurant, Millis MA Breakfast Basics Done Right at East Side Restaurant, Millis MA ![]() ![]() East Side Restaurant, Millis MA
We have heard the phrase "it's hard to screw up breakfast," in regards to going out for a morning bite, but that cliche has egg all over its face. I recently stopped by for breakfast at a highly-rated, well-regarded breakfast place close to home and proceeded to suffer through rubbery overcooked eggs, burnt toast, tasteless home fries, and undercooked bacon. The mug had a moldy smell and the muffins by the counter looked a notch below the worst grocery store kind. The waitress had the personality of a lima bean. This breakfast made me feel out to lunch! Recently, I have experienced similar breakfast scenarios with usually one menu selection being botched. Cooking breakfast is not exactly rocket science, so it's rather mysterious why these morning destinations seem to be a fleeting genre. What's more, some of the high-end, self-proclaimed gourmet breakfast spots (translated: three to four dollars more per meal) over think such a simple concept that the meals often end up tasting unfamiliar and downright weird. The other day, I dined at the East Side Restaurant in Millis, Mass., and suddenly breakfast seemed enjoyable again. Bright yellow flavorful scrambled eggs, perfectly crispy bacon, tasty home fries and properly toasted rye bread served as the delicious antidote... ![]() The meal came in at an amazingly affordable $4.75 -- no credit cards accepted, mind you, but that's OK. As the immortal Yogi Berra once said, ..."cash, it's just as good as money." With great service from long-time waitresses and a homey small dining room with tables and a small counter, it's very clear why the East Side is a go-to breakfast spot for many southwest of Boston. They get the basics done right, consistently conduct themselves in a pleasant manner, and offer rock bottom prices. What's more, the location is so nice with beautiful rural open fields near the Charles River out back. The farmers porch, out front, serves as a nice welcoming touch. The East Side also warms the soul with its hometown feel where everyone seems to know each other -- and it seems like there is always someone sitting at the counter talking about what's going on in town. It's almost like a restaurant from the midwest's heartland finding it's way into the Route 495 belt -- hard to believe the East Side is just 20 miles from Boston. It's really the prototype type of place for a hearty breakfast (including excellent pancakes, French toast and omelets, too!) and a good cup of coffee. On the way out, I noticed fresh-out-of-the-oven blueberry muffins and couldn't resist buying one. Good decision, as the muffin had a phenomenal overall taste -- and loaded with blueberries. Just another reason to bypass other local breakfast spots and make a beeline here whenever possible! The East Side Restaurant is located at 39 Main St. (Route 109) , Millis MA. Tel. (508) 376-2843. The East Side is a breakfast-only restaurant. Related articles: Discovering Millis Tangerini's Spring Street Farm, Millis Burger greatness at Victory Lane, Millis |
