Quintessential Rhode Island Communities

Bristol

If you're looking for that proverbial "All American town," then Bristol is the place to go.

Known as the "most patriotic town in America," Bristol abounds with American community spirit with American flags displayed throughout town and a red, white and blue median strip in its downtown. The oldest Fourth of July celebration in America, beautiful historic and incredibly well-maintained Colonial homes (one after the other on Hope Street), town buildings, bed and breakfasts and museums only augment the All-American" town look perhaps more than any other town we've visited in New England. Galilee (Narragansett)

Biff and Muffy might not like the rough and tumble authentic fishing village feel of Galilee in Narragansett, RI, but Jack and Diane will certainly love the public ocean water beaches and seafood shacks that make this South County Rhode Island travel destination so appealing. More...

Rhode Island state vacation summary

For a small state, Rhode Island sure has a lot of public beach space.

Along with Cape Cod, Rhode Island just be the best place to go for a family beach vacation. South County is the travel destination jewel where sparkling c,lean beaches with names like Roger Wheeler, Scarborough, Salty Brine, Watch Hill and Easton's provide enough room for everyone. There's plenty of sand, the water is relatively warm for New England and the waves generally not too rough when compared to, say, Maine.

Seafood restaurants with ocean views like Champlin's and George's, both in the fishing village of Galilee offer great clam chowder, lobster dinners and everything else you would expect from a New England "fresh catch-of-the-day" seafood restaurant.

If the beach scene isn't your cup of tea, there's plenty else to do in Rhode Island. Providence is considered by some to be one of the most impressive mid-sized cities in the United States. The Ivy-League spirit of Brownstone, tree-lined College Hill is a pretty place to walk and features some nice shops and restaurants in what seems more like a small town. The downtown offers big time shopping at the three-level Providence Place, theaters and museums, a lively arts communities, and some of the best restaurants in New England (Al Forno, Red Stripe and Sicilia's for pizza). Federal Hill offers charming Italian neighborhoods with plenty of authentic Italian restaurants and plenty of colorful storefronts.

Newport is famous for its mansions and myriad shopping and recreational opportunities, while small east side towns like Bristol, Tiverton Four Corners and Barrington are loaded with New England village charm and places to rest, relax and escape.

Rhode Island certainly makes the most of its small size. It's truly astounding how much there is to do here. We highly recommend researching Rhode Island on VisitingNewEngland.com to create your perfect vacation!
