Lawtons in Foxboro, Mass., Remains a Traditional New England Farm Stand ![]() Article and photo by Eric H. The Emerald City-like skyline of Gillette Stadium (home of the New England Patriots) -- majestically rising from the back yard of the old-fashioned Lawton's Family Farm in Foxboro, Mass. -- reveals a true case study of modern New England versus traditional. The time-tested "Lawtons Family Farm" and "This Old Barn" worn signs out front and the weathered, imperfect shingled farm stand dating back to the early 1800s suggest a place that should be located where the Clampetts lived before moving to Beverly Hills rather than a growing suburban Boston location with hundreds of retail stores and restaurants within a few miles. The inside of the barn looks like, well, the inside of a barn. Concrete floors, plain shelves, a weighing machine from another era, and friendly family-style customer service (with a real touch of modesty and gratefulness that we would buy from its farm stand) make Lawtons all that much more "real." They certainly won't ask for your zip code, email address or date of birth here when ringing you up -- just friendly conversation and a big "thank-you"! A farm stand, after all, is all about the food -- not some trendy retail statement. Bottled daily raw milk is the specialty here -- such a rarity in our country and regarded by many health advocates as a "superfood," teeming with live enzymes and nutrients. Lawtons also makes its own creamy formage blanc cheese -- as well as Asiago raw milk cheese -- and sells grass its own grass-fed beef in the form of stew, patties, ground all natural hot dogs and veal (from humanely-raised calves). All meat is hormone and antibiotic-free and sent to a USDA inspected facility before returned to Lawtons for purchase. The summer vegetables are truly farm-fresh, including tomatoes, cucumbers and corn. It's hard to remember tasting vegetables this good, even from the other excellent farm stands in the area. These foods bear no resemblance, in the best sense, to what we taste from the local supermarket! Lawtons also sells pumpkins in the fall, maple sugar and maple syrup, straight-from-the-farm eggs and handmade soaps at its year-round farm stand. Don't let Lawtons Family Farm fool you from its rather beaten up exterior. This is the way farms looked and operated before elements of big business gave a marketing program, exterior and interior sheen, and a touristy look to some of our formerly traditional farm stands in the Boston area (like the places that charge a fortune to just pick apples). Lawtons might come up on the short end of the stick when it comes to looks, and the selection of foods is limited, but what they sell is impressive tasty and nutritious. In a way, this was your local health food store before natural markets came into vogue. Although recently discovered, we expert Lawtons to become our our "Emerald City" of farm stands in the Boston area! Lawtons Family Farm 70 North St., Foxboro, Mass. Tel. 508-543-6460
