Boston, Mass., has become a star attraction as a prime destination for on location television and movie filming.

It all makes perfect sense. "Beantown" is full of history, character, a few characters here and there (OK, a lot), and an overall look that it truly one-of-a-kind. There's really no other city quite like Boston -- not your basic cookie cutter, perfectly-laid-out-on-a-grid city (far from it) that combines a remarkable sense of preservation with the modern. Each part of the city has its own personality which is well reflected as sites in most Boston based movies. Copley Square has the skyline, Fenway the baseball, North End the Italian flavor, South Boston the Irish personality, Beacon Hill the upscale culture, Boston Common the open green spaces, and Charlestown the scrappy but appealing demeanor. The city is also geographically compact, making it easy for visitors to walk and TV and movie types to film.

File this under better late than never, but over the past 20 years Hollywood and New York City finally picked up on the city's potential as a prime location for movies and television shows. Some notables: Good Will Hunting, The Departed, Cheers, Mystic River, American Hustle, The Heat, Fever Pitch, Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Legally Blonde and Ally McBeal.

The movie and TV scene in Boston has quickly become an integral part of the city's deep and rich culture -- notable, given the incredible history in this wonderful city. On Location Tours has wisely picked up on this emerging trend by offering Boston TV and Movie Tours that covers the aforementioned TV shows and movies on location in Boston, and much more.  Running April through December on Saturdays beginning at 11 a.m., the three hour bus site tour is led by local actors and actresses that educate and entertain with behind-the-scenes filming details and fascinating anecdotes. Some tour highlights: grabbing a drink at the L Street Tavern (home of Good Will Hunting), viewing 10 different locations from The Departed, and seeing the buildings used in Ally McBeal and Boston Legal.

To get an even closer look at the Boston movie and TV culture, On Location Tours offers a Boston Movie Mile Walking Tour that focuses on 30 locations in the Boston Common and Beacon Hill areas of Boston. Here, you can have a drink at Cheers, sit on park benches from Ted and Good Will Hunting, see a Jack Nicholson mob hangout in The Departed, and see where the car crash occurred in Blown Away.

A Boston friend of mine put it best, in true local speak, by saying about the tour, "It's wicked awesome!"  You can find out more -- including ticket pricing and tour schedule dates and times --  by logging onto the OnLocation Tours web site.
