What’s an authentic, south of the Mason Dixon line barbecue joint doing in a classic New England small town like Wrentham, Mass.? We have no idea, but it’s sure nice to dine at this nostalgic-looking roadside shack that truly goes great lengths to recreate great barbecue foods.
The barbecue meats at Commonwealth BBQ are pit smoked over hard woods for several hours to attain the traditional, proper and ultimately delicious tastes of Barbecue foods, including its pulled pork, beef brisket, St. Louis and Texas-style pork ribs, sausage and chicken.
We seem to have only a handful of barbecue restaurants in the Boston area that get the concept of outstanding barbecue cooking (like Redbone’s in Somerville and Blue Ribbon in Arlington and Newton), but I think Commonwealth gets the art and science of this cuisine down pat a notch better. Additionally, the portions are huge and the prices just right with some meals in coming in at under $12. On the less expensive meals, you get to choose two sides with the choices being cowboy beans (very well seasoned and spiced), hand cut fries, seasonal fresh vegetables (outstanding!), cole slaw and sweet potato fries (excellent!). For dessert, the generous portion of soft serve ice cream really hits the spot, especially on a hot summer day!
The colorful drive-in look with order-at-the-window service and picnic tables for dining creates a totally unpretentious outdoor dining atmosphere, perfect for enjoying barbecue cuisine.
What a great addition to the south of Boston cheap eats dining scene!
Commonwealth BBQ is located at 659 South St. (good location name for a BBQ joint!) (Route 1A) in Wrentham. Tel. (508) 384-9676. Commonwealth is open year-round for lunch and dinner.
