Len Libby Candies in Scarborough, Maine has pleased locals and visitors with its candies since 1926 but not in the typical candy house way.
Instead of just relying on making just handmade chocolates — not that there’s anything wrong with that — Len Libby’s has included heaping portions of creativity in the mix. One such example: The Maine Blueberries. No, not just the fruit. Len Libby makes this one with layers of white and milk chocolate covering locally-sourced blueberries. The result reveals a completely unique, delicious candy that often results in eating more than a handful at one sitting. Additionally, visitors love to bring Maine Blueberry candies home as a wonderful memory of their Maine travels.
Another highlight that you won’t see anywhere else: Lenny, a 1,700 lb. chocolate moose on display inside Len Libby Candies. As the world’s only life-sized chocolate moose, Lenny is made from an armature of steel, wrapped in mesh, covered with 10-pound blocks of chocolate and attached by melting chocolate onto the frame. He resides by a pond made with white chocolate and tinted for a realistic effect. What’s more, Lenny stands right next to a 380-pound chocolate mother bear and two 80-pound cubs situated. The scene features more Maine ambiance as the animals are situated by a Maine cabin by a pond and the mountains. Credit goes to Zdeno Mayercak, a sculptor and former instructor at the Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine, who created Lenny in 1997!
It all makes for a sweet experience but what makes the visit even sweeter is seeing a close-knit multi-generational family work together to keep the Len Libby legacy full intact.
