Nubble Lighthouse, York Maine.
Nubble Lighthouse

If ever there was a place representing a classic New England coastal scene, Nubble Lighthouse at Sohier Park in York, Maine would be that destination. The imposing yet comforting look of this beautiful lighthouse and all the surrounding scenery lingers long in the mind after an instantly memorable visit.

No wonder Nubble Lighthouse stands as one of the most photographed lighthouses in all of New England!

Here are 20 reasons Nubble is so special…

1. The free-of-charge parking lot is so close to the lighthouse, allowing for spectacular views and great photo opportunities.
2. Carefully walking down to the rocks affords even better views of Nubble Lighthouse.
3. Watching the waves crash on the rocks is simply mesmerizing.
4. Enjoying the moon beaming down on the ocean water forces one to relax and reflect.
5. The crisp look of the lighthouse with its red, blue and gray colors juxtaposed with the blue skies and ocean makes for a one-of-a-kind scene.
6. Sitting on a park bench and taking in the salt sea air and summer breeze lends further refreshment of the heart and soul.

7. The sight of abundant sea roses around the parking lot adds even more color to Sohier Park.
8. Although there are no picnic tables, Sohier Park is a fantastic spot to enjoy a picnic on the grounds.

9. Nubble Lighthouse is not just a summer spot. The refreshing fall chill in the air, the Lighting of the Nubble during the Christmas/holiday season and the laundry fresh air feel of spring make this a four-season destination.
10. The chance to enjoy some fresh local seafood and homemade ice cream is just a few steps away at Fox’s Lobster House.
11. Dunne’s Ice Cream offers some of the best homemade ice cream in the area. It’s about a five-minute walk from Nubble Lighthouse.
12. Gazing at the often stunning sunsets or twilight scenes across the big coastal sky is so different than what many of us see above at home.

13. The gift shop on the premises offers some impressive Maine-themed gifts with, of course, lighthouses as main (or is it Maine?) merchandise.
14. Catching a sunrise that only the Maine coast can beautifully express through unique colors and cloud patterns.
15. There are really no bad views. Find your spot and make seeing Nubble Lighthouse seem like your own discovery.
16. The restrooms are clean! Yes, that has nothing to do with classic New England but it’s important to have this benefit at a major attraction. That’s not always the case elsewhere.
17. Nubble Lighthouse is within walking distance of two major ocean beaches in Maine — Long Sands Beach and Short Sands Beach. I’d say it’s about a 25-minute walk to each, as well as downtown York Beach with its shops and York Wild Kingdom with its amusements and zoo.
18 Seeing the scuba divers and fishermen dotting the perimeter of the area.
19.Keeping your eyes open for great black-backed gulls, herring gulls, double-crested cormorants, sun fish and harbor seals!
20. The park is beautifully maintained by the York Parks and Recreation Department and all the volunteers. Your hard work to keep the Nubble Lighthouse area looking great is so much appreciated by us visitors. Thank you!
