Putney, Vt., located in the Green Mountains foothills in southern Vermont near the New Hampshire border, is a quiet, scenic community with plenty of Vermont charm and a true feeling of small town Americana. Here are three cheap travel ideas in the Putney area for your budget trip planning purposes:
1. Eat at the Putney Diner. Unpretentious, friendly and serving big, cheap portions of comfort foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is a great little townie place that bridges an old school diner with a family-style restaurant atmosphere. Putney Diner, 82 Main St., Putney, Vt. Tel. (802) 387-5433.
2. Celebrate Christmas, year-round, at Santa’s Land. This amusement park with a Christmas theme features “rides and slides” an “animal friends” area, and shops with Christmas-related items. Santa’s Land is best for little kids, but I think many of us are little kids at heart and enjoy destinations like this! I’d recommend checking the Santa’s Land web site for hours (a little inconsistent) and admission prices (very reasonable for a theme park!). Santa’s Land, 635 Bellows Falls Rd., Putney, Vt. Tel. 1-800-SANTA-99.
3. Enjoy some great maple products at Harlow’s Sugar House. Open from March 1st until late December, Harlow’s boils maple syrup on weekends during the maple sugaring season (call ahead) and in the summer features pick-your-own and ready-picked strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Fall is a special time with spectacular fall foliage in and around the premises and apple picking, as well as fresh cider being pressed. Harlow’s Sugar House, 563 Bellows Falls Rd., Putney, Vt. Tel. (802) 387-5852
